Now in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know what to pray for
as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for
words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because
He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
Romans 8:26-27
As a reminder to Christians, our covenant union with Christ is sealed with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, just as the grace of God saves us through Christ without any help from our weak and fallen bodies, similarly, even our prayers are mediated through the Holy Spirit. We should not be so arrogant as to petition God outside of Christ and removed from the Spirit, because the answer will most certainly be a resounding NO. However, as the Holy Spirit of God forever dwells in all who believe, then only through Him will we pray as we should according to His will.
